A Belmont, North Carolina CVS pharmacy store was being robbed at approximately 1:45 a.m. ET on early Friday morning, according to an NBC News report on Friday. Belmont is some-15 miles west of Charlotte.
The armed robber took three persons hostage inside the store and exchanged gunfire with the police responding to the robbery. The shots coming from the robber reportedly narrowly missed the policemen. The shooter is likely armed with a high-powered rifle. The police returned gunfire before learning of the three hostages inside the store with the robber.
After learning of the hostages, police officers requested backup which came from the Gastonia Police Department Regional SWAT team. The vicinity of the CVS was closed off while police attempted to negotiate with the armed robber.
All of the hostages were released by shortly after 4:00 a.m. ET, according to the police. None of them were hurt. However, the gunman was still inside the CVS, refusing to surrender as of 6:00 a.m. ET.
