President and CEO, Larry J. Merlo, of CVS/pharmacy, announced, Wednesday, that they will discontinue selling tobacco products starting October 1, of this year, according to CNN.

CVS is the largest pharmacy chain in the U.S., and the first major retailer to remove cigarettes and tobacco products from their shelves.

"Ending the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products at CVS/pharmacy is the right thing for us to do for our customers and our company to help people on their path to better health," Larry J. Merlo, president and CEO of CVS Caremark, said in a statement. "Put simply, the sale of tobacco products is inconsistent with our purpose."

According to cancer.org, the 1982 United States Surgeon General’s report stated that “Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality [death] in the United States.” This statement is as true today as it was then.

This bold move makes a huge statement to consumers and Americans who purchase cigarettes from this national chain, since CVS has 7,600 stores nationwide, and will lose $2 billion in sales.

Tobacco use is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths in the United States. Because cigarette smoking and tobacco use are acquired behaviors − activities that people choose to do – smoking is the most preventable cause of death in our society.

There are 14 types of cancer associated with smoking, accounting for 30% of all cancer deaths.
