In the 90s when the independent hip-hop scene was undergoing a resurgence in the U.S. and turntablism became an art form, Cut Chemist was rising among the ranks as a member of the funk Latin band Ozomatli, and the underground rap group Jurassic 5.
Performing Thursday at Mezzanine as part of his limited Tunnel Vision West Coast Tour, Cut Chemist is joined by special guests Edan featuring MC Paten Locke and Mr. Lif.
Born Lucas MacFadden, the Los Angeles-based DJ and record producer has released numerous collaborations with DJ Shadow and is working on the follow up to his epic solo album The Audience Is Listening. The album’s title track was used in the first Worldwide Apple Nano commercial with Cut performing at all major U.S. and European flagship Apple stores while the single What’s The Altitude became a favorite on YouTube.
Cut’s most recent mixtape, Sound of the Police was created live using only one turntable, a mixer, a loop pedal and all original vinyl pressings. His thoughts when performing the mix live was to challenge the contemporary DJ as well as himself.
Driven by his passion for Ethiopian, Colombian, Sudanese and Afro-Brazilian sounds, respectively, this mix also features a few classic tunes putting it all into context to help remind audiences that hip hop culture is indeed rooted in Africa.
Still pushing the envelope when it comes to live DJing, Cut Chemist combines entertainment with music and cultural education.
"It’s important to widen peoples musical vocabulary and I feel its my job as a DJ to do so."
