Saley Tahirou, a 2007 graduate of the University of the District of Columbia with degrees in Economics and Finance, has been living proof that hard work and great customer service does pay off.
An original native of Niger, West Africa, Saley is now the GM of the small business franchise that he joined 13 years ago. “People ask me why am I here with two degrees and I always answer that this is what God chose for me,” Saley said.
His employees agree that he is the perfect man to manage the Burger King franchise. George Camas has worked for eight years with BK and he enjoys working with Saley. “He is a great person to work for. He always helps his employees and he reminds us that customer service is the key to our business,” Camas said.
“I never forget that the customer is the reason we are all here. The customer spends the money that pays our salaries. I tell each of my employees to always remember the customer is number one,” Saley said. The pride that the general manager takes in his store accounts for the spotless appearance of the franchise.
“When the letter arrived in Niger in 2000 it was a life changing experience. The letter offered me a scholarship to UDC and it changed my life. I never forget that,” he said. Although Burger King Worldwide is the second largest fast food hamburger chain in the world. Saley is focused on his DC customers enroute to Baltimore and his Baltimore customers enroute to DC. The traffic at his drive thru is constant.
Sara Hennessey, dressed perfectly in her BK uniform, shares the positive affirmation of her general manager. “I love working here. Saley cares about his employees. He is always doing special things for us to help us. He buys things for us and when you try to pay him back he will say that he did it to help. He is really great,” Hennessey said.
Being part of a nationally and internationally recognized organization has its advantages. The BK Corporation operates in over 13,000 locations serving more than 11 million guests daily in 89 countries and territories worldwide. Like Saley’s BK about 99 percent of Burger King Restaurants are owned and operated by independent franchisees, many of them family-owned operations that have been in operation for many years.
“Never forget the customer pays your salary. Always greet your customers as if they make it possible for you to have a job. Always show them respect,” Saley said.
