Cushingberry suspension goes into effect

The 45-day suspension of George Cushingberry, Jr., Detroit City Council President Pro Tem and a licensed Michigan attorney, went into effect on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, the State of Michigan Attorney Discipline Board (ADB) reports.

Based on Cushingberry’s plea of no contest, ADB Tri-County Hearing Panel #21 found that Cushingberry failed to take reasonable steps to protect his client's interest upon termination of representation, and failed to withdraw from the representation when it became clear that the representation would result in a violation of the Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct.

Cushingberry and the Grievance Administrator filed a stipulation for a consent order of discipline, which the Attorney Grievance Commission approved and the hearing panel accepted. In accordance with that stipulation, the panel ordered Cushingberry’s suspension from the practice of law in Michigan for 45 days, subject to a condition relevant to the alleged misconduct. The panel further directed him to pay restitution of $500.00 and costs of $905.33.

ADB records show that Cushingberry also received two reprimands, one in 2002 and one in 2005.
