Whether you are new to homeschooling or not, chances are you have heard the name A Beka books mentioned when the topic of curriculum came up.  A Beka books is one of the leading choices in homeschool curriculum.  So who are they?  What are they about?  Here is an excerpt from their website"Three decades ago, God raised up A Beka Book to provide Christian schools with God-honoring, high-quality textbooks and teaching aids to help each school fulfill the goal of its ministry. The hundreds of traditional Christian educational materials developed by A Beka Book have been developed and refined over a period of 50 years in the classrooms of Pensacola Christian Academy. Christian schools throughout the nation recognize that A Beka Book sets the standard of excellence in the publishing of textbooks and other materials for Christian schools.

At A Beka Book, we are unashamedly Christian and traditional in our approach to education.

The A Beka Book approach to Christian education keeps learning lively, interesting, and memorable. Our materials reflect sensible theory that is firmly anchored to practicality. A Beka Book materials have been developed as a result of 50 years of actual classroom experience in Pensacola Christian Academy, one of America’s largest and most respected Christian day schools."

A Beka offers several options for homeschoolers.  For starters, they have a video option from their academy.  Then they have another program through their academy for grades K-6 that has you as the teacher but A Beka keeping report cards and transcripts.  It is a fully accredited program, as well.  The final option, and the most popular, is the traditional textbook/materials for home schools.  By teaching this way,  you can customize what you need for your child by choosing the books and supplemental materials for grades K-12.  You can purchase fully-laid out lesson plan books so that all of the work is done for you along with teacher guides/answer keys.

Another great thing about using A Beka is that they come to our area several times a year and host curriculum shows which they refer to as 'material displays'.  They come to local hotels for a day and set up a large variety of their curriculum so that you can go and shop and touch and see everything and order directly from them on the spot.  You don't have to pay shipping when you order from a material display.  The listing of when the next show will be in our area can be found here

A Beka is a great curriculum for the traditional homeschooler who is comfortable with the textbook and workbook approach that is similar to that found in the public schools.  As a matter of fact, A Beka curriculum is used in many private Christian schools here in our area.
