The winter season can make the most loyal Richmonder wish for warmer living. No need to transplant to a warmer state, seek out these Richmond hot spots serving up California comfort food.
The aptly named California Huevos at Kuba Kuba are sure to get you in a warm weather state of mind. Steaming black beans are smothered in salsa, topped with fried eggs, covered in gooey soft cheese and sliced avocados. Three thick slices of bread are squeezed into the overflowing bowl to help soak up every last drop. It’s a beautiful red, green and yellow mountain of deliciousness that will transform the average diner into a fanatic.
Fish tacos are a quintessential California fast food, found everywhere from fine dining rooms to gas station snack bars. Cafe Ole in Shockoe Slip delivers a fantastic version with a ton of flavor. The combination of lightly fried white fish and crunchy sweet vegetables is textural perfection. This taco has everything you could want inside its flour tortilla but if you’re a salsa devotee, Que Pasa also boasts a self serve salsa bar to top your taco. Even if you’re a chicken of beef fan, try the fish taco…it’s the best.
For dessert, head to Secco in Carytown for some house made blood orange sorbet. Citrus is best in the winter months so eat it up and think warm thoughts.
