Curator honored by portrait artist

The place of an art gallery curator is usually behind the scenes. But at the 4731 Invitational at the 4731 Gallery this week, the curator's place is also on one of the walls, or at least, his portrait's place. Bryant Tillman, the curator of the 4731 Gallery, posed for a portrait by Craig Paul Nowak.

Due to various scheduling problems, many of the subjects of Nowak's portraits at the show could not attend the opening reception which took place last night. In fact, Nowak and Tillman were the only ones to show up (Nowak used to do a lot of self portraits, and his painting Reverie does include a self portrait in a corner). "Bart Simpson couldn't make it," Tillman joked, referencing the whimsical inclusion of the fictional child from The Simpsons in Reverie.

Also at the opening was Derek Weaver, one of the partners at Provident Real Estate Management. Although a numbers guy by trade, Weaver is knowledgeable about art and insightful enough to understand the potential of the 4731 W. Grand River site as an art gallery. "This is one of our special properties," Weaver said.
