Cupcake Camp Miami 2014 Baker Spotlight: CraveClean

Francesca Caltagirone is a lover of sweet treats and fitness. Through CraveClean, she has brought those two loves together and created sweet treats that fit into a healthy lifestyle. Her goal was to create sweets that were made with all natural ingredients and were low in calories and high in protein. Before you can see and sample CraveClean's cupcakes at next week's Cupcake Camp Miami event, Francesca gave an interview detailing her inspiration behind CraveClean.

How did you come up with the name CraveClean?
We wanted to come up with a catchy name that reflected the essence of the vision for the company. Everyone craves sweets, and often turn to empty-calorie food to satisfy them. Our products are nutrient-rich to help not only to satisfy the sweet-craving, but also to nourish the body. We do that by using clean ingredients that are good for you and can make you feel satisfied and energized, not sluggish and regretful!

What inspires you to bake?
I have always been quite the foodie, but when I started on my fitness path I was unable to indulge in the things I loved and felt that no protein shake, bar, or supplement was ever quite tasty enough! I embarked on a mission to create a clean indulgence that not only satisfied my cravings, but could also be perfect for pre/post workouts and had ingredients that were beneficial to the body!

What is your favorite thing that you offer?
All of our treats are delicious, but our most recent product, CleanNella Brownie, is amazing. It is made with a homemade vegan Nutella! But as a vanilla lover, I'm a huge fan of our twist on the typical vanilla cupcake, the Coconilla!

What is your best selling item?
We have such a variety, but the Strawberry Fields is the best seller. I don't think many can turn down a vanilla cupcake filled with sweet strawberry goodness.

What are your baking hopes for the upcoming year?
We ideally would love to be found in more locations and give our customers easier access to our cupcakes. Hopefully in a year we can open up our very own bakery.

What has been your biggest kitchen disaster?
We haven't faced a kitchen disaster as of yet because our recipes take so much time and attention because we focus on the nutritious value of each product. Fingers crossed, we will keep that going, but it's all in the love you have when baking and the passion we have for this lifestyle. It takes time and patience, but there is no greater feeling that knowing our customers love the clean products we share!

Nutritious, Yummy, and Pure.

What advice do you have for others who are considering baking as a career?
Make sure you are good at numbers and are passionate about the products you put out. Baking is a numbers game and it takes a lot of time to perfect it; and, of course, patience to let them do their thing in the oven. But if you love what you do, there is no greater career. Sharing food that you make for others is the most gratifying career because it’s something we all have as a common interest and it brings people together.

Do you do custom orders?
Yes, all our products can be custom made for any occasion.

What is the price range for your sweets?
As low as $2.00 for a cupcake to $55 for a double tier stuffed cake.
