Alan Cumming is coming!
He’s bringing his acclaimed one-man show to the Castro Theatre one night only, Saturday, July 10 at 8pm.
Who is Alan Cumming? If you’re gay, you should know. Maybe not his name, but his extensive body of work is one we’ve all seen and admired him. And while he’s been married to women, many times he plays “one of us” – onscreen and off.
Theatre lovers know Cumming from his Tony-winning turn in “Cabaret” and the revival of “Threepenny Opera.”
And current TV lovers can often see him on the hit “The Good Wife” and the gay animated hit “Rick & Steve, the Happiest Gay Couple in All the World.” (not to mention he made a few appearances on the cable show “The L Word”).
Still don’t know him? Well he’s easily spotted as a comical villain or witty second banana in the “Spy Kids” or “X-Men” franchises. But perhaps you’re too busy drooling over Antonio Banderes or Hugh Jackman in those films to see the quality of Cumming’s work. Yet, Cumming also has his own drool-worthy quotient.
Cumming is probably better know for his voice. Whether it be singing or doing different accents, Cumming captivates with that voice. If not singing in a musical or promoting his new CD “I Bought a Blue Car Today,” Cumming makes you forget about his sexy Scottish accent when he’s doing a dead-on American accent in “Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion,” an upper-crust British accent in “Emma” or a Russian one in “GoldenEye.” Cumming’s voice is an incredible instrument to be heard and appreciated.
He plans to use it to full advantage in his Castro Theatre show. Not only in the stories he tells, but will be singing some songs from the new CD as well.
And if that doesn’t make you fall for Cumming. Then I’ve saved the best for last. Cumming is an accomplished film director. With few credits under his belt, including the little-seen “Suffering Man’s Charity” (which played gay film fests in 2007 as “Ghost Writer”), Cumming with co-writer/co-director Jennifer Jason Leigh did the brilliant “The Anniversary Party,” one of the best films of 2001. That film shows enough promise for a long career behind the camera.
But fortunately for us, he isn’t finished as an actor. Cumming is in the highly anticipated “Burlesque,” with Cher and Christina Aguilera, coming out later this year.
So with all of this talent and awards he’s won on stage and film, it’s hard to believe that not everyone knows Alan Cumming by name. Let’s change all that.
Before going to hear him sing at the Castro Theatre, catch up on some of his movies. In addition to “The Anniversary Party” or the super fun “Romy & Michele-” you might try to hunt out the hard-to-find “Prague” film or if want to be a little more cultish, you could try “Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical” or “Spice World.”
And after you do your homework, get tickets to Cumming’s show at the Castro Theatre at www.ticketweb.com or 415/863-0611. And Cumming will be signing autographs of his CD after the show.
