Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, near Corbin, will host its annual Arches and Waterfalls Weekend on January 24 through January 26, 2014.

The weekend will include hikes to area natural arches and waterfalls as well as evening programs on astronomy and history. The hikes will start in the lounge area of the Dupont Lodge. For some of the hikes, van transportation to trail heads will be available via a provided van. However, the van space is limited and participants may drive personal vehicles to trail heads if the van is at capacity. Moderate hiking is required for most of the trips.

Friday’s scheduled activities include a tour of Cumberland Falls at 4:00 p.m. and an astronomy program in the Moonbow Room of the lodge at 7:00 p.m.

The schedule for Saturday begins with the Dog Slaughter Falls hike at 10:00 a.m. This is a two mile, strenuous hike. At 2:00 p.m., participants can join the Natural Arch and Yahoo Falls hike. This hike will also be a two-mile hike with a planned return to the lodge at 5:00 p.m. Saturday’s activities conclude with a history of Cumberland Falls at 8:00 p.m.

For those who did not get enough hiking the previous two days, Sunday will offer a hike to view the various unique features at Cumberland Falls. This hike will start at 10:00 a.m.

The registration fee for the Arches and Waterfalls Weekend is $10.00 for adults; there is no charge for children under the age of 12.

Cumberland Falls State Resort Park is home of the only ‘moonbow’ in the western hemisphere. Often called the “Niagara of the South,” the waterfall is 65 feet high and 125 feet wide. The mist from these falls produces the famed moonbow during a full moon when the sky is clear.

Besides the rare moonbow, the park has 17 miles of hiking trails ranging from some that are less than one mile to the 10.8 Moonbow Trail. Other facilities at the park include the Riverview Restaurant, picnic facilities, campground, fishing, horseback riding, and swimming.

Cumberland Falls’ beautiful stone Dupont Lodge is complimented with solid hemlock beams and knotty pine paneling. All of the rooms at the lodge offer great views of the hills and hollows of south central Kentucky.

Cumberland Falls is located about 15 miles west of I-75 on KY-90 and about 165 miles from Metro Louisville. Google Maps can offer detailed driving directions.
