Trainer Luca Cumani is looking forward to winning his first ever John Smith’s Cup at York. Betting tipsters have placed odds on a pair of Cumani’s sprinters which include Danadana – a second favourite – at 7-1 and Kirthill at 8-1. The current favourite for the £150,000 event is Mijhaar which has been assigned 4-1 betting odds.

Speaking about the upcoming horse race, Cumani told racingpost.com: “Both horses are in very good order. Danadana has won his last two and he did it well at Redcar. Unfortunately he was withdrawn from Royal Ascot due to the rain and we hope it stays away from York, as he won't run if the ground is soft. "Kirthill ran very well at Ascot and he showed he is up to getting in the frame.”

Kirthill is the son of Danehill Dancer and came in sixth in the Listed Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot. However, Cumani cautions that he will pull the horses if the ground at York proves testing given the wet weather that has plagued tracks the past few days.

On Tuesday, Fairyhouse was cancelled due to a waterlogged track. It appears rain will continue to pound parts of England on Wednesday. According to the Met Office, “further rain affecting parts of Scotland and northeastern England, perhaps easing late on. Scattered, occasionally heavy showers should develop elsewhere, before conditions improve from the west later.”
