Culver City Restaurants: Ever heard of Middle Ridge Winery?

Chris Johnson from Middle Ridge Winery

There are many wine bars and restaurants in Culver City. They feature an outstanding array of vintages, and I’ve enjoyed many that I’ve sampled at these places. But I’m always excited when I’m exposed to new wines, and I’m here to tell you a bit about a small winery in Idyllwild-Middle Ridge Winery.

First of all, I love supporting the little guy. For those of you who have visited boutique wineries, you know the passion and devotion that is involved in executing these types of wines. There’s a lot of love, to say the least and the intimacy of such places really makes a wine special. Check out the story of Middle Ridge’s winemaker Chris Johnson, and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Tonite, we’re enjoying their 2008 Pinot Grigio, as the shrimp basks on the barbie. It’s light, crisp and aromatic. I usually prefer Chardonnay, but this is a nice change of pace for this summer evening. Scents include fresh pear, melon, key lime and green apple. Fermented in stainless steel, it was allowed to proceed through a full malolatic fermentation, which helps cut down on acidity.

Food pairings include chilled melons, nectarines or plums, or perhaps a nice quiche. But the shrimp is calling us tonite, and in my mind, the wine is just fine. Besides, I like breaking the rules a bit, how about you?
