I often use music when I teach my students English. I wrote about one example in a previous article

"Is music the international language?" That is a question I often ask my students. Some say yes because they understand that you can hear the emotion in melody. Of course, when I play Indian or micro-tonal music I get a different response. Some say yes until they hear songs sung in different languages. It is a fun question to ask and makes for an enjoyable conversation class.

Cultures in Harmony truly illustrates how music is the international language. This organization uses music to bring people together.

"In Zimbabwe in 2006, "Sound of Water, Sound of Hope," taught AIDS orphans in Harare how to write music inspired by water in order to draw attention to water access issues at their school. In the Philippines in 2007, CiH worked with the Tala-Andig tribe in Miarayon, Mindanao to develop compositions that celebrated their heritage. In Papua New Guinea in 2008, CiH guided the Yoro tribe to creating compositions designed to raise awareness about the environment, HIV/AIDS, and cultural preservation. These works received their premiere at Divine Word University in Madang." - www.culturesinharmony.org/index.php/about-us/history

Cultures in Harmony was founded by William Harvey, a Julliard graduate.

"In December 2007, he made his Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Youth Symphony, playing with "fire and assurance" according to the New York Times. Previously that year, he gave the Filipino premiere of the Elgar Concerto with the Manila Symphony and toured Qatar with the Juilliard Jazz Ensemble. Before graduating from the The Juilliard School, where he studied with Ronald Copes, he won the school's concerto composition, giving the New York premiere of Behzad Ranjbaran's Violin Concerto with the Juilliard Orchestra conducted by Gerard Schwarz. That performance has been broadcast twice on NPR's Performance Today." - www.culturesinharmony.org/index.php/artist-biographies/42-violin/98-william-harvey
