culture, culture in Tacoma

The sun is out and the arts calendar is full this weekend. And it all starts tonight with Tacoma’s Third Thursday ArtWalk, which will offer a host of gallery openings and freebie museum admissions from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

It's common for galleries to open shows during the monthly Tacoma ArtWalk for obvious reasons. This month, the openings appeared to be greater than normal. And as I plotted my ArtWalk path, I noticed it would be impossible to hit my desired galleries during the allotted ArtWalk time - 5 to 8 p.m. The path required a full tank of gas.

While the usual roster of galleries, from Art Stop to the Brick House Gallery to Mad Hat Tea Co., have their usual cool artsy stuff there are a few unusual hot spots that are brighter on the radar than others.

The Speakeasy Arts Coop will be showing off a gaggle of trash collages by Aaron Trotter-Voronoff, who will also toss in a performance bit.

Giants in the Mountains: The Search for Sasquatch, will have a “sneak peek” at the Washington State History Museum before it officially opens on Saturday. This exhibit was on display at the State Capital Museum in Olympia a year or so ago. It displays the evidence, the theories as well as the search methods for the local legend.

While ArtWalk this month is especially packed with various art offerings, the real to-go place these days is Tacoma Musical Playhouse, which will be staging the regional premiere of the rock opera “RENT.”

The turn-of-the-century musical pulls its story line from Puccini 's opera “La bohème ,” as it follows the lives of a handful of art slackers in New York City as they deal with AIDS, poverty, friendship and their future. On Broadway, the show gained more than 24 theater award nominations, including 10 Tony Award
nominations, during its 12-year run.

Performances are at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays, with2 p.m. Saturday matinees on Feb. 6 and 13 at the theater, 7116 Sixth Ave.
