TAIX devoted itself to hosting intimate acoustic duets. Gold Lake took the stage and provided the audience with lovely sounds and a penchant for melody. Top-notch guitar work captures the eye and ear even in an acoustic set.
Gold Lake in Spanish is Lago de Oro...but they are Gold Lake and their singer speaks and sings in perfect English. This caused a few people in the audience to tease them a bit. “Hoye chica, ¿Cómo es que hablas el Ingles perfectamente bien?” (How is it that you speak perfect English?) Another asked, “¿Dónde está tu accento?” (Where is your accent?)
Sam (Lua Rios) smiled, laughed and shrugged it off. It could be that she wasn't expecting it from an “American” audience. However a collection of expats will always show up to something labeled Spanish hoping to hear something en Español. And when given the chance, they will be as vocal as the Madrid home crowd.
In speaking to Sam (Lua) further for a few moments, her warm personality shines. She definitely acts Spanish, that's for sure. She's really from Madrid. Her mother is English and married a Spanish man. She visits family in England on a regular basis. Now she lives in Brooklyn. With so many bilingual kids around LA, it shouldn't be so surprising that her English is perfect, or even that she speaks English with very little English accent. It's another ideal case for the Culture Collide Festival.
Hearing their samples on their webpage provides a solid picture of their sound—smooth, beautiful, and kind of post-punk revival. Check out their tunes at www.myspace.com/weareGoldLake
