Most die hard sports car fanatics have at one time or another heard the story of the legendary high speed run that a mysterious driver took through the streets of Paris in 1976 with a camera strapped to the front of his Ferrari 275. It really happened, and was also recorded on film. I actually purchased that film "C'etait un rendez vous" on DVD many years ago, and have been a big fan ever since I saw it.
The film shows a rather fast view of a drive through the streets of Paris in a briskly driven car in the early morning hours. I don't want to ruin the end of the film, but our mysterious hero driver is apparently on his way to an important meeting or as the French say, "rendez vous." The film had many mysteries that added to its mystique.
Who was the driver? It was rumoured to be any number of famous F1 drivers of the day. What type of car was he driving? Well it appeared to be a Ferrari, a 275 GTB to be specific as the legend goes. Was it really totally spur of the moment, unorchestrated and unplanned? Well there were certainly a couple of close calls with pedestrians and other motorists along the way.
Recently many of the films mysteries have finally been solved, and by the most reliable source to boot... the film's director, Claude Lelouche. He reveals that it was not a famous professional F1 driver behind the wheel, but actually Lelouche himself. Lelouche also revealed that the actual car he was driving was in fact his own Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 sedan. The sound of the Ferrari was added later during post production.
See for yourself below and make your own conclusions! I have a link to the original 1976 film, and the documentary made 30 years later with Lelouche himself...

"C'etait un rendez vouz"has long been one of my favorite short films. Enjoyed reading about it and watching it again. Thanks!
What a fake!!!! All those pidgeons and he didnt hit 1 of them?? Cant have been going over 60 mph so its no surprise he then faked the sound by replacing the Merc engine with a Ferrari..the old codger would 5h!t his pants if I drive the same route in my 7.5 litre Firebird....Merc 450s couldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding...and the poolice in Paris must been too busy sha66in in their cars to notice daft old gits driving like nutters first thing in the morning!!! Hopefully his film and admission he was the driver will lead to charges being brought as soon as possible....cant wait to read about his fine and revoked licence!!! #:) muhahahahahahahahahahahahaha
I linked up to your article in my original about this story, a link back would be appreciated.
Ok I guess you don't want to cross promote. That's cool too.
