Taiwan is known for being one of the culinary meccas of Asia, and the capital city of Taipei is not only home to great local eats, but a number of decadent and internationally acclaimed restaurants as well.
One of the lesser known up and coming stars in the culinary world is chef William "Abu" Bu. Abu was previously the chef at local favorite Tutto Bella Italian Restaurant prior to opening his own restaurant in April 2009.
Although Abu Authentic Cuisine is tucked away on a small side street, the secret is definitely out as Abu now requires a minimum of 5 days for reservations due to the restaurant's increasing popularity.
I've had the opportunity to dine at Abu on several occasions and it has truly become one of my favorite restaurants in Taipei. The dinner menu is simple - two prix fixe options featuring 8-9 courses of exquisitely prepared French inspired dishes. Prices for the set menus are $2,300 and $2,600 (approximately $75 and $80 US based on current conversion rates).
Your dining experience starts off with a cup of Oriental Beauty Tea, recognized for its innumerable health and anti-aging properties. Enjoy courses of delicately prepared dishes like quail and Foie Gras sandwich and braised abalone in prawn sauce. Another favorite course is the palate cleansing organic rose granita, served prior to the main course. For those wanting a one of a kind experience, request Abu's special order dessert soufflé, so big that it requires its own table for serving. This soufflé is one of the most popular specialties and truly a testament to Abu's culinary talents as the delicate masterpiece never falls, even after the first cut.
From the place settings fit for royalty, to the artistic plating, Abu has spared no expense in creating a wonderfully intimate environment. The restaurant can seat approximately 30 in the main dining area and there is a private room downstairs that can seat up to 10.
An extensive wine list is available, or diners can bring their own wine with a corkage fee of $500 NT (approximately $15 US). If you like Old World wines, Abu definitely has a nice selection from the more well-known regions.
Abu Authentic Cuisine is located at 28 Siwei Road in Taipei. Phone reservations can be made by calling the local number: (02) 2707-0699. Abu is open from noon - 3pm for lunch and 6pm - 11pm for dinner.

Delectable! The slideshow really complements the description of the food. And what a bargain for the meal, too.
