Cueto has started the last three Opening Day's for Cincinnati and will square off against Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals. This spring was not full of good health for Cueto as he battled through some injuries, but grabbed the Opening Day spot with a strong finish in Arizona.
He'll pitch twice in the first five games as he is expected to pitch on April 5 in New York against the Mets. Filling out the rotation will be lefty Tony Cingrani (April 2 vs St. Louiors), Homer Bailey (April 3 vs St. Louis), Mike Leake (April 4 vs New York), and Alfredo Simon (April 6 vs New York).
The big surprise to anyone not paying attention to the Reds this spring is Simon. Usually the Reds long reliever, Simon will fill in for the injured Mat Latos. Latos is expected to miss one start according to Price, but Simon, originally a starter for the Orioles, will fill in as long as he's needed. Brett Marshall was vying for the final spot, but an injury to his middle finger cost him the opportunity. Out of all the Reds starting pitchers, only Leake, Simon, and Cingrani did not miss any time because of injury.
Sean Marshall and Jonathan Broxton will also start the season on the disabled list. Price still has some choices to make before the Reds Opening Day roster is finalized thanks largely to the number of injuries the Reds have had this spring.
