Cubs board member Pete Ricketts wins Nebraska republican primary for governor

What do you do if you and your siblings own the Chicago Cubs, you live in Omaha, Nebraska, and you are not the face people see walking around the ballpark because you are rarely there? If you’re Pete Ricketts, you run for governor of Nebraska.

In 2006, Ricketts ran for a senate seat in Nebraska and lost – badly. But that was 2006. It’s now 2014 and it’s the governor’s seat he wants.

Voters in Nebraska went to the polls in yesterday's primary and voted Ricketts the Republican candidate for the Nebraska Governor's seat. He ran against six other Republican contenders, and barely won with only 2,200 votes separating him from Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning, who came in second.

When Ricketts announced his candidacy in September, brother Tom, who is the face of the family that owns the Cubs, told that the family supported Pete and that his position on the Cubs Board of Directors was unchanged during the campaign. It’s likely to remain unchanged while he campaigns across Nebraska for votes prior to the November election.

As noted in a previous article, Pete Ricketts is the only one of the siblings who does not live in Chicago, so he is not well known, even among Cubs fans. He was spotted during spring training at the new Cubs Park complex in Mesa, AZ, but it was only once.

The Cubs are owned by the Ricketts family. The four siblings, Pete, Tom, Laura and Todd, are all on the board of directors. Tom is chairman of the board. He can be seen walking around the Wrigley Field most home games.
