Yosmel de Armas, 22, a Cuban Olympic soccer player has defected in Nashville, TN. Olympic hopefuls from around the world, are qualifying in soccer matches at LP Field this week in Music City.
When Armas was noted as missing by reporters, after the game against Canada, his red faced coach reported that he was ill and still at the hotel. But later, when the Cuban team departed from the hotel, Armas was not on the bus. Speculation grew early today when the player still had not been seen.
This morning, a local TV channel, reported that two people from the Cuban Olympic soccer team have now confirmed that Yosmel de Armas has indeed defected in Nashville, TN. It is not known if Armas has any local relatives or even if he is still in Nashville.
No one from agency’s that aid Latino immigrants, churches, attorneys, or law enforcement officials have heard from the Olympic hopeful. In fact, Armas hasn’t been seen since Saturday night when he participated in a game against El Salvador.
