Cuba showcased at the Getty Center in May

May 3, 2011 – The Getty Center has a number of events lined up this month that will bring to Los Angeles the sights, the music, and the flavor of Cuba.

May 14 at 7.30 pm will see An Evening with the Omar Sosa Afreecanos Quintet.  Sosa, born and raised in Camaguey, Cuba, is well known for his fluid Afro-Latin Jazz.  Along with Marque Gilmore, Childo Tomas, Peter Apfelbaum, and John Santos, the Grammy nominated pianist returns to the Getty as a complement to the exhibition listed below.   Tickets to the Omar Sosa music night are $15/$20 and can be purchased at http://tickets.getty.edu/show_events_list.asp

The exhibit, A Revolutionary Project:  Cuba from Walker Evans to Now, starts May 17 and will extend through October 2.  It will look at three periods of Cuban history as seen through the eyes of photographers.  It will unite Walker Evan’s views from the 1930s with the views of others who participated in the revolution of 1959 and with contemporary foreign artists who have visited the island in the past two decades.  Besides Evan’s work, the exhibit will display photographs by Virginia Beahan, Raul Corrales, Alex Harris, Alberto Korda, Osvaldo Salas, and Alexey Titarenko.  A Revolutionary Project:  Cuba from Walker Evans to Now is a free exhibit.
