Don’t bore your Cubs with an ordinary field trip to the Art Museum--take them to see cool cars and huge historic trains at the St. Louis County Museum of Transportation! The train museum is a great outing for Cub Scouts—most of the exhibits are outside and kids are encouraged to climb aboard several engines and cabooses to sit in the seats, play with the levers and ring the train bells.
Not only will your Cubs have a fun field trip, but they can earn rank advancements, too. Saturday classes are offered for Cub Scouts and only cost $20 plus admission, which is discounted to $3 per scout. Add a ride on the trolley and miniature train for extra fun—only $4 per scout.
Classes are 45 minutes for Tigers and Bears and 60 minutes for Webelos, and are led by a museum volunteer educator familiar with scout requirements.
• Tigers can fulfill their “Visit a Museum” (1G) and “Make a Model Boat or Plane” (elective 17) requirements.
• Bears can fulfill “Research a Famous American” (3B) and “Visit a National Registry Site” (3D)
• Webelos can earn the Traveler’s Activity Pin
Another fun activity for Cub Scouts is the Museum’s Travel Case. The case costs $15 to reserve, plus admission at the group rate of $3 per scout. The case serves 10 scouts, so large dens may need to reserve two cases. The case will allow scouts to complete a fun scavenger hunt throughout the museum--just don’t tell them it’s educational!
The museum offers scouts more than just a chance to explore trains.
Webelos can earn their Scientist Activity Pin at special Science Workshops offered at the museum by Mad Science of St. Louis. These classes are offered once a month and cost $8 per scout.
Tigers can earn Elective 36 with a special all boy Theater Workshop. The workshop costs $8 per scout, which includes their admission, workshop fee and a ticket to a professional puppet show afterward.
Scout dens on a budget (or who can’t meet during scheduled class times) can complete their requirements on their own without taking the museum’s classes. Just be sure to plan your trip in advance and bring your handbook to check off activities.
