CTA continues testing new prototype rail cars

Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is continuing testing the new prototype 5000 series rail cars, most recently on the Red Line beginning in February.

Features on the new trains, built by Bombardier, continue CTA’s ongoing sustainability initiatives by integrating efficiency, accessibility, safety and environmental comfort controls.

Efficiency improvements include regenerative braking technology, which returns lost energy during braking to the system. Advanced monitoring also maximizes efficiency, effectiveness and reliability.

Advanced accessibility includes doubling the wheelchair space and a new seating layout that will add easier movement and bicycle accommodation. The trains are also equipped with active suspension systems that help better align the car to train platforms.

Additional lighting, cameras, LED station indicators, smoother riding alternating current (AC) propulsion system and upgraded heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC) provided further safety and comfort to CTA riders.

All these issues are significant improvements in making the CTA ‘El’ a more sustainable, faster and comfortable ride for users. Testing of prototype trains began in April 2010, and the10 cars must successfully complete testing on all eight rail lines during conditions throughout the year.
