First, readers said goodbye to Harry Potter. Then, Bella and Edward had their swan song. (Oh, my—a pun!) And next Tuesday, the concluding chapter of the Hunger Games trilogy will be published.
Fortunately, local readers will have the chance to give the series a proper send-off. On Friday, August 27, Connecticut resident Suzanne Collins will present Mockingjay (Scholastic, $17.99) in a special event sponsored by R.J. Julia Booksellers.
The event will take place at First Congregational Church/Hubley Hall, located at 26 Meetinghouse Lane in Madison, at 1 PM. Tickets are $19.07, and include a copy of the book. They can be purchased online or by calling the store at 203-245-3959. Interest is high, so be sure to reserve your seats while they’re still available.
The Hunger Games, published in 2008, introduced readers to a post-apocalyptic world in which a powerful authoritarian government sponsors violent games of survival. A # 1 New York Times Bestseller, the book has appeared on their list for more than 60 weeks, in addition to receiving a starred review from Publishers Weekly and winning numerous accolades. Its sequel, Catching Fire (2009), has fared similarly well. More than 1.5 million copies of the two books have been printed in North America alone.
From the publisher:
Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins’s groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year.
Suzanne Collins is also the author of the five-part fantasy/war series, The Underland Chronicles, which won her numerous accolades and critical praise. Before turning her attention to books, Collins had a successful career writing for children’s television, working on the staff for several Nickelodeon shows including Clarissa Explains It All and The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo. She received an M.F.A. in Dramatic Writing from New York University.
Special note from R.J. Julia: Ms. Collins will be reading only; there will be no q & a. Due to an existing hand strain, rather than signing books, Ms. Collins will stamp each book with a a custom-made stamp created exclusively for 2010 Mockingjay events only. She will stamp only ONE book per customer and will not be able to personalize.
