Colorado State can't be beaten at home.
The Rams have run off an amazing 22 straight home wins, which tied a school record Saturday night with their win over UTEP. That record was set way back in 1960-62, when CSU called the old South Gym – off College and Elizabeth – home, five years before Moby Arena was even constructed. It's the fourth longest streak in the nation behind Syracuse (33), Kansas (31) and South Dakota State (23).
In fact, the last time Colorado State lost at home in front of their Moby Maniacs was November 19, 2011, when a man named Larry Eustachy led Southern Miss into Fort Collins and pulled off the only loss by the home team all season long. Ironically, Eustachy now leads the Rams into battle.
Let's take a look at what else has happened since then:
-
Colorado State President Tony Frank fired former Athletic Director Paul Kowalczyk and put Jack Graham in his place.
-
Graham hired Jim McElwain as football's head coach (Dec. 2011), and when Tim Miles left for Nebraska (Mar. 2012), hired Larry Eustachy (Apr. 2012)
-
Miles led Rams basketball to their first NCAA Tournament since 2003 as the team swept MWC powerhouses UNLV, New Mexico and San Diego State at home.
-
Colorado State blew out TCU in the first round of the MWC Tournament to punch their ticket to the Big Dance (Mar. 2012).
-
Eustachy landed impact players in recruits Jon Octeus, Gerson Santo and Jordan Mason (Spring/Summer 2012).
-
CSU power forward Pierce Hornung has grabbed 337 rebounds in 36 games he's participated in, or 9.4 boards per game over that span. (He sat out five games last year and two this season due to separate concussions).
-
Colorado State's Moby Arena was put through phase one of its renovations, which include new ticket offices, new and improved concession stands, a four-sided jumbotron above halfcourt and even improvements to the public restrooms (Aug. 2012).
-
Months of debate raged and it was decided that Colorado State would move forward to attempt to fund a new on-campus football stadium by 2014.
-
In politics, President Barack Obama spoke on CSU's campus (Oct. 2012), was re-elected (Nov. 2012) and marijuana possession was legalized in Colorado (Jan. 2013).
It's been a wild and whacky 14 months in Colorado, and things are looking better all the time for Colorado State basketball.
The Rams look to create a new record for most home wins in a row Wednesday, January 16 against Air Force, with the game tipping off at 7 p.m. MT at The Whale.
