Marshall based Crime Scene Camps will be hosting two one-day CSI programs for homeschoolers in Mankato on April 8 and April 15.
The program, run by homeschooling father Thomas Jones, will involve real evidence collection equipment and supplies to teach science in a fun, hands-on way.
Each participant will get to take part in every activity.
Jones says:
"This is a parent-child program which means that parents may attend with their kids. I find that there is a wonderful level of interaction on this subject, and the parents and kids enjoy working together to try to figure out what the evidence is telling them."
He describes the program:
The first two thirds of the program cover various types of evidence, including fingerprints, shoe prints/impressions, blood (synthetic), ink and document analysis, trace evidence, and the use of other sciences in forensic science, including botany, entomology, palynology, dendrochronology, geology, and chemistry. The final third will be a mock crime scene where the kids will have to collect evidence, analyze it, and solve the mystery. There will be a half hour break at approximately 12:45 pm so that everyone can have lunch while the "crime scene" is set up.
The age range for the program is flexible for homeschoolers, but the majority of kids signing up are 8-15. Jones says that he has had many 7-year-olds and kids older than fifteen and he can adjust content to fit the ages of those attending.
Jones and his family travel all over the United States to offer this program for schools, homeschool groups, scout groups and others. Programs for the winter and spring include Kansas City, Topeka, Omaha, Minneapolis, St. Cloud, Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Chicago, Rochester, Sioux city, Des Moines and Milwaukee.
The program will run from 10-3:30 at the Evangelical Free Church of Mankato, 709 North Riverfront Drive, Mankato.
The cost of the camp is $40. If two children in the same family register, the cost is $70. If three or more children in the same family register, the cost is $85. Parents may attend free of charge with their children.
Jones says that if 20 children register, the cost per child will be reduced to $35 and families that have paid before the reduction will receive a refund of the reduced amount at the program.
Full details about the Mankato event can be found here.
There is a limited enrollment. If you plan to register, email Crime Scene Camps and they will hold a spot for five days while awaiting your registration form. They are currently listing a registration deadline of March 25 for this program.
