Cryptozoology first appeared in print in 1959. It actually did not become a word until Bernard Heuvelmans published his book, "On the Track of Unknown Animals". The book became a sensation, and a new discipline was born called cryptozoology. But what does cryptozoology mean? It is three Greek words, "Kryptos" (hidden), "Zoon" (animal), and "logos" (study) which means "Hidden animal study". The crypto-creatures that are pursued in cryptozoology are called "cryptids". Cryptid is a relatively new word used to denote animals of interest to cryptozoology. John E. Wall of Manitoba, Canada coined the word in 1983. Cryptids are either unknown species of animals or animals which thought to be extinct, that may have survived into modern times and await rediscovery by scientists. The coelacanth is a fish that actually existed and supposedly went extinct about 65 million years ago. I as a creationist do not believe the coelacanth lived millions of years ago but was created by God on the fifth day of Creation week, according to the Bible in Genesis 1:20-23, about 6,000 years ago. Just think about it, how could the coelacanth be still a coelacanth (same as found in the fossil record) without changing to a land animal according to evolution?
But there are cryptids (crypto-creatures) that might possibly exist. There is evidence mounting on their existence but they do not actually have a specimen like the coelacanth that can verify that they are real. Here is two of these creatures :
Champ the Lake Champlain Monster. This cryptid (crypto-creature) is known to inhabit lake Champlain. This lake is the largest body of water in the U.S. other than the Great Lakes, occupying portions of what is now Vermont and New York (both states passed legislation protecting Champ) as well as the province of Quebec in Canada. It is almost 110 miles long and 13 miles wide, with a maximum depth of 400 feet. The surface area is 436 square miles. This is definitely a good place for a crypto-creature to hide. There been many sightings of this crypto-creature over the years, starting with the Native American Indians, and later the Europeans who settled into the region in the 1600s. The most convincing evidence that this crypto-creature does exist is the photograph taken by Sandra Mansi on July 5, 1977. Sandra, her fiance', and her two children were enjoying a summer afternoon on the Vermont side of Lake Champlain, when suddenly this monstrous creature broke the water raising its head and neck out of the water. She watched in horror as the creature's neck swayed in a snake-like fashion as it surveyed the shoreline, but she was able to snap one picture on her camera before it went below the surface of the water. The resulting photograph is one of the most convincing pieces of crypto-creature evidence ever recorded. Despite numerous examinations, the photo has never been proven a hoax.
Dennis Hall, director of Champ Quest says these creatures do exist. He has written a book about these creatures. He says, "This book is not written from a viewpoint, What if...? Champ exists. I have seen these animals on twenty occasions. Some of my sightings involved more than one animal and one encounter involved three senses - sight, sound, and smell. There is a healthy population of these animals living in Lake Champlain. They are here for a reason; this is their chosen home. The most frequently asked question : "What is Champ?" I have described what I have seen as lizard-like animals with a long neck, four stout legs, and webbed turtle-like feet. They have a forked tongue and omit a hissing noise. They love shallow waters, eat small fish, and are seen on land. At birth they are a foot long and will grow to twenty feet. Oh, and they are very ugly. The babies are kinda cute" (Dennis Hall, Champ Quest : The Ultimate Search 2000, Field Guide & Almanac for lake Champlain, March 2000, p.15).
Another crypto-creature is Bigfoot. It is unquestionably North America's biggest cryptozoological mystery. Bigfoot is a creature of many names. According to naturalist Dr. Robert Michael Pyle, Native American legends called it by several exotic names, including Sasquatch, Sokqueatl, or Sesquac (from a language spoken by several tribes of Pacific Northwestern Native Americans) no matter how it is pronounced the name means "wild man".
The best known photographic evidence to date is the 16 millimeter movie taken of Bigfoot on October 20, 1967 by Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin. The creature was enormous. It was a female Bigfoot about 7 feet tall that walked upright like a man. But it was not human. In fact, it was like nothing the outdoorsmen had seen before. The film they shot became one of the most famous pieces of footage in Bigfoot history. But experts cannot agree on the film's authenticity. Some say its an elaborate fake, a hoax to make people believe in Bigfoot. But others, believe this film is proof positive that this elusive primate is more than a North American myth. But could this crypto-creature possibly be the "satyr" that is mentioned in the Bible (Isaiah 13:21),(Isaiah 34:14). Satyr from the Hebrew means "faun", "he goat", or "hairy one" (shaggy). In Greek mythology they were considered gods of the woods and mountains. Also there is a possibility that this crypto-creature could be a creature that can blend into its surroundings, like a chameleon does. While yet others believe Bigfoot is an inter-dimensional being that can appear in different locations at different times. Then you have the famous footprints of it. Some were definitely faked, while others could not be identified as any known animal track.
What is Bigfoot? There is no clear cut evidence such as hair, blood or bone to prove that it is some type of primate. Whatever it is, it is very elusive and trying hard not to be found. But the sightings continue!
As a creationist, I believe these creatures, Champ and Bigfoot, might possibly exist. And if they do, they were created by the Lord Jesus Christ, for He created all things (Colossians 1:16-17) for His pleasure (Revelation 4:11).
