Does crushing illegal street racing vehicles actually discourage the taboo sport? Not really, and if anything it just encourages them to run from police and create opportunity for more deadly chaos. States and countries around the world are adopting the "crush'm" law in a macho attempt to diffuse the street racing populous. Is this right? Does it actually work? No. Think about it from the street racer's perspective and you will understand why threatening to crush these vehicles is a foolish mistake. Crushing illegal street racing vehicles only results in increased flee attempts and raises the chances of innocent death.
The mindset of the street racer
The average street racer is very passionate about their vehicle. They are so passionate they refer to the vehicles as life like entities, giving them names and recognizing them as family members. If your family member or friend is going to be destroyed, you would do anything to protect it; right? The same goes for these vehicles. Illegal street racers spend more money and a majority of their life building vehicles of which they are respected and acknowledged for. The average investment made by an illegal street racer into his or her vehicle is anywhere from $1,000 up to $100,000 USD! Out of shear protection for the beloved investment, they will go to any length to protect it. If that means evading police, they'll do it.
Survey of those involved
As seen in the footage below, Ontario police happened to catch some illegal street racers and destroy their vehicles. Is this really the right move? Out of a private survey conducted, 9 out of 10 passionate motor sport enthusiasts would attempt to flee if threatened with destruction of their beloved vehicle. Destroying these vehicles is not the answer! This is an example of how not to handle illegal street racing!
The answer to illegal street racing
The answer to solving illegal street racing in your area is not to threaten the street racers with extreme repercussions. The answer is to open more track events, lower the price to drag strips, and create more opportunity for the avid motor sport enthusiasts to use their hobby in a safe, sanctioned format. Take a look around your town and you will see plenty of places that can host a legal street racing event. If you do not have a drag strip, you can make one out of cones, proper medical personnel, and a nice open parking lot. Autocross events and various length drags setup especially for these street racers can actually lower the illegal street racing rates.
The simple solution to illegal street racing
Tampa, Florida leads the way in street racing prevention!
Take Tampa for example, we have over 70 performance shops oriented towards building fast vehicles. We also have racing events at our local tracks every weekend! Street racing must be horrible here, right? Wrong! Since Tampa has opened up the tracks, created more autocross locations, and embraced the street racing culture the statistics have greatly improved. Illegal street racing busts happen less often, and the illegal street racing accident rate has also dropped. Destroying their vehicles is not the answer, creating a safe and sanctioned opportunity is. Threatening those passionate about their vehicle with destruction is only going to make things worse.

Love you like a brother but disagree - street racing is ignorant and irresponsible - ESPECIALLY in a metro area like FL where the biggest cause of accidents is speed DIFFERENTIAL, with gramma doing 35 in the right lane and commuters doing 65 in the left. real men pony up the cash at the track. you can't tell me that someone who puts $3k-10k or more in their car can't afford the track fee? a chin motorsports, NASA, or other track time is only a few hundred. doing 140 on streets - especially without traning is as ignorant as buying drugs from a stranger - IMHO, of course
Open more tracks!?! Run that by someone who OWNS a track and see what they say! If you know the cops are going to crush your ride and you still street race I say, "Hope your shoes are in good shape..."
Michael, you heard you my opinion already in the subject, in my opinion this is very excessive,To take vehicle that costs thousands of dollars and to crush him, I am a rider of down Hiil then tomorrow I will participate in the illegal competition will they take me ride the ways and crush me,very insane man.
in israel you no what happened
, even at our place this is not like that, and in israel no mod at all!!
good post bro...
I disagree with the crushing of cars on just illegal street racing especially since they dont do it for DUI's or drug runners... be consisent or dont be anything at all. Thanks for the heads up on the organization, "Evo Street Racers," I recently became a member. Its about time we unite... someone needs to represent our interests.
That's a great point Jackson, excellent comment.
those fukn cops just dont care coz dey dnt kno how it feels like 2 build a car..as if dey nvr speed wen dey usn dey car..
I like the fact that no blame is placed on the racers in this article... i.e. everyone should bow to their negligence and make attempts at successfully integrating these poor unfortunate souls who don't have the money to get an education but drop thousands of dollars on their rides. The argument is overly simplistic... Opening a race track will directly decrease illegal street racing? As if. The sick thrill for these people is not in the race itself, but the context of the race. They destroy neighborhoods and murder innocent people. If someone is MURDERED by their negligence and racing, lock every one of them found, hit them with a 1st degree murder charge, and let them cry in jail about their crushed dreams and sick fantasies.
Finally, to argue that crushing their cars is excessive is hilarious. These people are thugs... period. They recklessly endanger the lives of others while masturbating on the hood of their cars.
honestly the worst comment i have ever hear, this man obviously does not even understand the half of what it mean to street race or even be a car enthusiast for that matter.
Jackie sounds like someone who would have owned slaves and blames all black people for something one man did. Well said --93.
