On Saturday October 26th, the Syracuse Crunch shut out the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in front of a large crowd at the War Memorial in Syracuse, NY. Kristers Gudlevskis made his AHL debut between the pipes against the Sound Tigers, blocking 22 shots.
All of the Crunch's five goals came in the 2nd period. J.P. Cote was the first to score, not even a minute into the period after a pass from Dana Tyrell to the left circle. Cote ripped a shot past Anders Nilsson to start the fire that would spread throughout the period.
A little over a minute later the Crunch would score again. Vladislav Namestnikov would put the Crunch up by two goals after taking a shot from his knees.
Later into the period, Matt Taormina scored off a one-timer from a J.T. Brown pass during a power play to give the Crunch a 3-0 lead. Evan Rankin would score after a breakout pass, beating Nilsson on his glove-side only a minute and a half after the previous goal.
A four goal shut out wasn’t going to be good enough for the Crunch. Of the seven power play opportunities the Sound Tigers had, they were not only unsuccessful on all seven, but the Crunch also scored a shorthanded goal at the end of the second period.
Cedric Paquette and Mike Angelidis would get a two-on-one opportunity in which Paquette would go top shelf to beat Nilsson for the 5-0 lead. Kenny Reiter would come in to replace Nilsson in goal for the 3rd period.
Although the Crunch did not score in the 3rd period, the Sound Tigers couldn’t light the lamp either, ending the game with a 5-0 shutout. The Syracuse Crunch go to the Times Union Center in Albany, NY to play the Albany Devils on Wednesday October 30th. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m. EST.
