Cruise ship runs aground in Bahamas

What was to be an ordinary day in the life of a luxury cruise ship and her passengers, became anything but, as Saturday the MSC Poesia ran aground off Grand Bahama Island.

The Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association (BASRA) reported that the ship apparently sustained no damages from the incident.  According to BASRA, officials waited until about 6PM Bahamas time for the tide to rise, and then utilized four tugs to pull the ship free.

By 8PM the ship was on its way to its next port with no major damages reported.

A video on YouTube (attached) shows the ship stuck in what they say is a reef structure.   According to the narrator of the video, the reef suffered extensive damage.

The Poesia is owned by MSC Cruises.  She was launched in 2008 at a cost of $360 million.  She is 93 tons and carries a maximum of 3500 passengers.

This is not the first time the Poesia has been in the news.  Just two months after she was launched in 2008, Poesia and Costa Classica collided in the Adriatic Sea near Dubrovnik.  There was minimal damage with no one hurt.  Cause of the collision was that the Poesia's anchor became loose and she drifted into the Costa Classica.  Both continued on their scheduled routes after the incident.

No word as to whether there will be any follow up by the Bahamian government regarding the damanges to the reef.
