It’s a busy week for your Netflix queue or for your trip to the Red Box or wherever it is that you see new DVDs. This week has five new movies of note coming to DVD for the first time and it is truly a mixed bag of films. There’s a movie about a famous internet hacker. There’s a sequel to a popular animated film based on a popular kid’s book. There’s crude humor. Then there is an ensemble cast of older actors in a comedy set in Sin City.
Here are the films coming out today, January 28, 2014, in DVD:
Last Vegas - Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro. A group of guys who have been friends since they were kids reunite to celebrate the coming nuptials of one of their own. All of them are older, many of them with medical problems, but all of them wanting to party down in Las Vegas. Once they get to Vegas they discover that the place has changed since they were last there, and that things among their friendship may also have changed. The movie got moderately decent reviews when it was in theaters. Rated PG-13.
The Fifth Estate - Benedict Cumberbatch, Dan Stevens, Alicia Vikander. A movie based on the true story of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. Cumberbatch garnered rave reviews for his portrayal of the very controversial hacker and secrets-distributor. However, despite that, the movie itself did not get very good reviews. If you feel that you want to know more about Assange, there are several documentaries out there that might offer deeper insight. If you are a fan of Cumberbatch, this might be one for you. Rated R.
Rush - Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Bruhl, Alexandra Maria Lara. During the 1970s Formula 1 racing was huge in Europe. During that time there were two people who dominated the intensely dangerous sport: Niki Lauda and James Hunt. The two had wildly different styles both on and off the track, but were close friends despite their intense rivalry. Then Lauda got into an accident that nearly ended his life and career. The movie garnered decent reviews for the racing scenes, performances by the leads and for Ron Howard’s direction. Rated R.
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa - Johnny Knoxville, Jackson Nicoll, Spike Jonze. The crazy crew from Jackass are back, only this time they (sort of) tell a story amid the craziness. The titular bad grandpa (Knoxville) is on a journey across the country with his grandson. Although the story is the journey, the things that grandpa and his grandson do was unscripted and done just to get shocked responses from the unsuspecting public. The movie got mixed reviews, but if you are a fan of Knoxville and his crew’s method of gross-out, stunt-centric outrageously crude humor then this one is for you. Rated R.
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 - Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan. The voice crew who made the original film a huge success are back in this sequel. This time the movie picks up where the first one left off and the food that Flint Lockwood created using his machine in the original has now begun to mutate into food-animals. The fate of the world is once again in Flint’s hands as he has to shut down the machine and save the world. Rated PG.
