Now playing at the Majestic Theatre is "Wicked" and there’s still time to catch this charming musical about the unexpected friendship that develops between Elphaba The Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch of the North. It is based on the 1995 bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire and it’s playing until Sunday March 30, 2014.
Fans of all ages showed up on Thursday to see this lighthearted show filled with magic, music and dance. The story begins with the citizens of Oz celebrating the death of the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda proceeds to ask them to see things through her eyes. The rest of the show is a flashback on Elphaba and Glinda’s story.
The first act gets things rolling and it includes the infectious “Popular” by Galinda which made Hayley Podschun an audience favorite. It ended with a standing ovation after the last number, “Defying Gravity” during which Elphaba places a levitation spell on her broom and flies away from the palace guards.
Anyone familiar with the 1939 movie will understand the references throughout the second act including how the monkeys got their wings and the where the famous ruby slippers came from. Almost as fun was keeping up with how the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow came to be. The setting for the Emerald City was simply stunning with so much flashy green to go around.
