Want to make the most of your workouts? Then join Bob Harper in becoming a CrossFit fan. A new study shows that when it comes to burning fat and getting you fit fast, CrossFit wins, reported the Huffington Post on October 23.
Commissioned by the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the study evaluated volunteers as they sweated their way through two separate workouts. The researchers from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's exercise physiology program discovered:
- Men burned almost 21 calories a minute.
- Women burned slightly over 12 calories a minute.
Although the participants took different amounts of time to complete their routines, all maintained an elevated heart rate. In addition, they achieved approximately 80 percent of their VO2max, thereby reaching the required levels of improving fitness industry guidelines.
And here's the "wow, it works" workout factor: Regardless of their starting level of fitness, every volunteer rated the CrossFit workout as challenging.
"Each person was extremely exhausted at the end," Paige Babiash, M.S., told ACE.
Ready to rush out and get started? Not so fast. Although these high-interval workouts produce fast results, they are extremely intense.
