In a very recent column, we started talking about the Crossfit Phenomenon.
We mentioned a number of local affiliates that offer this style of training. In this column, we will go a bit deeper and look into the competitive phase of this relatively new sport, called the Crossfit Games. The following brief excerpt from the Crossfit main website pretty much says it all;
What are the CrossFit Games?
The CrossFit Games are the ultimate test of fitness. It's a grueling three-day competition in which the world's fittest athletes compete in a variety of workouts. What are the workouts? Each year they change, and the details of them are not announced until a couple days before the event. This means that all year long, the athletes are training for a competition whose format is almost completely a mystery.
The first such games were held in 2007, and to get a history lesson on the games from then until now, check out the website:

In most of the iron sports covered here, the events are pretty standard from one competition to the next. Even in Strongman competition, where the possibilities are broader and the events have some slight variations from one meet to the next, there are not many surprises. The possibilities in the Crossfit games seem almost endless by comparison. This factor makes training for the games that much more difficult, as you just can’t be sure what exactly you will be up against.
The games have a number of levels and take place all over the world. The United States is broken up into 7 regions (Northeast, Southwest, etc), with each of these broken down further into sections. We are in the “Central East” region. This region is broken down into 3 sections. The western- most section consists of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. The southern-most section consists of West Virginia, Virginia and Washington DC, while our section is composed of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware.
The sectional results from our area’s workouts back in March of this year can be found here:

The Central East Regionals were held in May, and those results can be viewed here:

The finals are coming up in July, on the 16th through the 18th, in Carson, California, and this year’s event looks to be bigger and better than ever.
As it turns out, one of the organizers and a competitor of the highest order is a local resident who is also a PE teacher at Quakertown High school. Her name is Tanya Wagner, of Apex Crossfit, who we mentioned in the last CF article here. In the next column here, we will share Tanya’s awesome story, so please stay tuned!
