Crossbarn’s 2012 Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast will, from the first sip, bring you back to why you enjoy Pinot Noirs. It's deep ruby, going on purple color, is inviting from the first visual inspection. Its full nose will suggest a pleasurable experience. And the lingering taste on the palate will keep you interested.
The cherry and earth combination you find at the beginning fills in with a bit of cola at the end. Overall, the taste is just right for a moderately priced Pinot.
The 2012 Crossbarn Pinot Noir has its origins in a variety of vineyards in the Sonoma Coast region. The grapes were night harvested (not unusual, but definitely not common) and underwent a 15 day fermentation.
The aging, ten months, primarily in older oak, allowed the Pinot to develop some character. Winemaker Paul Hobbs has tried (and succeeded) to create a Pinot of distinction without a huge Pinot price. This wine will please both discerning palates as well as those looking for a “better” Pinot without the large price tag.
The 2012 Sonoma Appellation growing season was a good one for Pinot Noirs. It had the warmth necessary for full grape maturation and, when combined with the typical Sonoma marine influence, the season produced grapes perfect for Pinot harvesting.
This is a wine to share. It probably will keep for several years, but I see it as a wine to consume after a year or two in your cellar.
