Cross-town car chase cut at cop shop

Sure it is probably coincidental -- considering how much trouble he is accused of giving San Francisco police last night, like allegedly hitting one officer with a car – but it is only fair to point out that Jacques Samuel at least found a convenient place to crash when he drove into a slab of concrete, just a few yards away from a police station.

The SFPD says they initially contacted the 29-year-old San Francisco man at about 8:50 p.m. near 25th and Dakota streets, in the City’s Bayview District, and officers noticed, “What appeared to be contraband or a weapon in the passenger compartment.”

Fleeing in what would turn out to be a rental car with Nevada plates, the driver sped away and the chase was on, eventually winding down Interstate 280 through the Bayview, across town to the Ingleside District, then to 19th Avenue on the City’s west side.

While going northbound on 19th Ave. near Taraval Street, officers attempted to stop the driver, who maneuvered well enough to evade police but only by striking one of the officers with the auto, police say.

Another officer “discharged his firearm at the suspect, believing the suspect was attempting to cause serious bodily injury” to himself and the other officer, however, investigators say the driver was “not struck by the round discharged by the officer,” and continued evading police, hitting some parked vehicles along the way.

The pursuit kept going north up to Golden Gate Park, and then east to just a few yards down the street from the Park station, where the suspect drove over the sidewalk and into a cul-de-sac, and the rental car finally came to rest, nestled firmly against a concrete barrier.

Police say the suspect bailed out of the car and the chase became a foot race, but ended soon after.

The suspect and the officer struck by the car were both treated at San Francisco General Hospital. The officer sustained minor injuries, was treated and released, while the suspect was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Sgt. Eric O’Neal of the San Francisco police department said Samuel has so far been charged with suspicion of felony evading arrest, felony assault with a deadly weapon, felony hit-and-run with injury, misdemeanor hit-and-run with property damage, and a felony parole violation.
