So, you've completed your crocheted piece, and are looking for a fast, easy edging/border? This simple puff stitch variation edging works well on most projects, and the best part is that it will not distort your piece's shape.
This is how you crochet an easy puff stitch edging.
Gather your materials
For this edging you will need a ball of yarn in any weight, a crochet hook in the size of your choice, scissors, and a yarn needle.
Abbreviations
To complete this edge pattern you will need to know the following abbreviations.
- Slip stitch: SL
- Stitch: ST
- Chain: CH
- Single crochet: SC
- Double crochet: DC
- Five double crochet together: 5DCTOG (explained in the pattern)
The pattern
- Row 1: SL in any ST, SC in each stitch around until you reach the corner, (SC, Ch 2, SC) in the corner, repeat around the piece, ending with CH 2, SL in the first SC, CH 5, turn,
- Row 2: **/*SK 1 ST, 1 DC in the next ST, CH 2,* repeat from * to * until your reach the corner, [in the corners] (DC, CH 2, DC),** Repeat from ** to ** around the piece, ending with a CH 2, SL in the third CH of the turning CH 5, turn,
- Row 3: (CH 3 [counts as 1 DC] 5DCTOG in the next CH 2 space, CH 2, 5DCTOG in each CH 2 space around, ending with a CH 2, SL in the first CH on the first CH3, fasten off.
- Sew in your yarn ends/tails.
Note: How to crochet 5DCTOG -- *YO, go through the CH 2 space, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops on your hook,* Repeat from * to * until you have 6 loops on your hook, YO, pull through all six loops.
If you want a wider edging/border you can repeat row one a few more times before working row two, or you can repeat row one a few times after row three.
