Crochet socks

If you are a crocheter, you will be pleased to know that Janet Rehfeldt with the help of Mary Jane Wood has come out with her book “More Crocheted Socks”. Her first crocheted sock book “Crocheted Socks" was published in 2003. This book has 16 new designs.

You may know by now, that I am an avid sock knitter. So, I am very happy to spread the word about making socks to crocheters. Stop in at any LYS (local yarn shop) and you will find endless sock yarns. They cover a range of materials as well as patterning (self striping, Fair Isle, jacquard) and colorways that can be thrown into the washer and drier.

Janet will introduce you to sock construction and terminology. You will make your socks custom fit by learning how to take your foot  measurements. She has patterns for toe-up and cuff down. Try both and then decide, what you like better. You will be shown three heel styles (heel flap with gusset shaping, short row and aferthought). The sock patterns are just above the ankle and most use hook sized D-3 or E-4.

The patterns are for easy, intermediate and experienced skill levels. If you have never tried this before, you will be given special instructions on how to finish your socks and how to work the stitches as well as a list of abbreviations.

Cobblestone Streets are a pair of socks that incorporates three different color yarns. Only one color is used per row, making this look much more complex than it is. A moment of Zen, No-Shows and Paint My Toes are perfect for yoga, clogs and pedicures. Way Beyond the Blue is an easy lace weight top-down sock, leaving you the image of the ocean waves. You will also find a hiking sock and a lacy Victorian sock to crochet and socks with beads.

If you would like to knit a pair of socks for comparison, Janet has written a book “Terrific Toe-Up Socks, Knit to Fit”. In this book is a knitted version of Buttoned Down, called Marled Zig Zag, with the same cute cuff and buttons. If you are a crocheter or a knitter, branch out and crochet a pair. Your feet will love you.
