This is a good pattern to learn how to do the shell stitch in the round.
Use up your leftovers for multicolored socks
It's fun to use your team or holiday colors.

Size: 3 to 6 months

Skill Level: Easy for one color. Advanced beginner for 2 color version

Materials:

Yarn: Red Heart Soft Yarn Article E728 100% acrylic Soft Worsted #4 yarn

[Solids:140g (5 oz)234m (256 yd) Prints: 113g (4 oz) 187m ]

The colors I used were: 4420 Guacamole and 4422 Tangerine

Amount of yarn used: 2 ounces for one color version, 1 ounce of each color for 2 color version.

Crochet Hook: J/6mm

Normal supplies: scissors, blunt yarn needle, tape measure

Measurements: 7 1/2" toe to cuff; 3 1/2" across (flattened)

Gauge: Rnds 1-3 = 2 inches

To make a smaller or larger sock, go up or down one hook size.

Abbreviations: ch = chain, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet

sl st = slip stitch, st = stitch, rep=repeat, beg=beginning

Hdc=half double crochet= Yarn over hook, insert hook in the next stitch to be worked, yarn over hook, pull yarn through stitch, yarn over hook, pull yarn through all 3 loops on hook (half double crochet made).

Instructions One color version:

Rnd 1: Ch 2, working over the yarn tail, 8 sc in 2nd ch from the hook, pull yarn tail tight to close hole. (8)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc. (16)

Rnd 3: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next) 8 times. Join with a sl st to first sc. (24)

Rnd 4: Ch 3( counts as the first dc), dc in each rem 23 dc. Join with a sl st to beg dc. ( 24)

Rnd 5: Here you begin your shell row. Ch 3, 2 dc in same st ( beginning half shell made), skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 2 sts, 5 dc in next st ( shell made), *skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 2 sts, shell in next st, rep from * 2 more times , skip 2 sts, 2 dc in same space as half shell to complete the shell. Join with a sl st to top of beg ch 3. ( you will have 4 shells and 4 sc) Do not turn.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same sp as joining , shell in next sc, *sc in 3rd dc of next shell, shell in next sc, rep from * 2 more times, join with a sl st to first sc. ( you will have 4 shells and 4 sc ) Do not turn.

Rnd 7: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st ( beginning half shell made), *sc in 3rd dc of next shell, shell in next sc, rep from * 2 more times, 2 dc in same sp as beg shell to complete shell, join with a sl st to top of beg ch 3. ( you will have 4 shells and 4 sc) Do not turn.

Rnd 8: Repeat Rnd 6

Rnd 9: Repeat Rnd 7

Rnd 10: Rep Rnd 6

Rnd 11: Rep Rnd 7

Rnd 12: Rep Rnd 6

Rnd 13: Ch 2, hdc in same space, hdc in each rem dc and sc around. (24 hdc) Join with a sl st to first hdc. Fasten off and weave in yarn tail. I like to chain 2 before I fasten off to lock in stitch.

Instructions Two Color Version:

Note: I suggest you make a one color version as a practice piece before you make the 2 color version.

Rnds 1-3: With first color rep Rnds 1-4 of one color version

Note: Just keep dropped color to back of work and do not work over it.

Rnd 5: Here you begin your shell row. Ch 3, 2 dc in same st ( beginning half shell made), skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 2 sts, 5 dc in next st ( shell made), *skip 2 sts, sc in next st, skip 2 sts, shell in next st, rep from * 2 more times, skip 2 sts,2 dc in same space as half shell to complete the shell. To color change join : Insert hook into top of beg ch-3, drop first color to back of work, leaving a 2 inch beginning yarn tail, pull up second color, slightly tug on first color to lock in stitch. Join completed. ( you will have 4 shells and 4 sc) Do not turn. Do not work over dropped yarn, just let it dangle until you get to it again You may work over second color yarn tail.

Rnd 6: With second color, ch 1, sc in same sp as joining , shell in next sc, *sc in 3rd dc of next shell, shell in next sc, rep from * 2 more times, To color change join : Insert hook into sc, drop second color to back of work, pull up a loop with first color. Join completed. Slightly tug on second color to lock in stitch. ( you will have 4 shells and 4 sc) Do not turn. Do not work over dropped yarn, just let it dangle until you get to it again.

Rnd 7: With first color, ch 3, 2 dc in same st ( beginning half shell made), *sc in 3rd dc of next shell, shell in next sc, rep from * 2 more times, 2 dc in same sp as beg shell to complete shell. To color change join : Insert hook into top of beg ch-3, drop first color to back of work, leaving a 2 inch beginning yarn tail, pull up second color, slightly tug on first color to lock in stitch. Join completed. ( you will have 4 shells and 4 sc) Do not turn.

Rnd 8: Repeat Rnd 6

Rnd 9: Repeat Rnd 7

Rnd 10: Rep Rnd 6

Rnd 11: Rep Rnd 7

Rnd 12: Rep Rnd 6

Rnd 13: Ch 2, hdc in same space, hdc in each rem dc and sc around. ( 24 hdc) Join with a sl st to first hdc. Fasten off. Cut second color leaving a length for weaving in and weave in both yarn tails.
