Crochet a wall rosary with recycled t-shirt yarn

See also

A wall rosary is a large rosary made entirely for decoration and devotion. The wall rosary makes a wonderful, traditional statement of faith and encourages family prayer. Saying a family rosary after dinner or before bed will provide a tranquil and spiritual space, especially for the children. Members of the family can take turns leading the decades and all can pray the endings. Special intentions may be announced before reciting the rosary or at the beginning of each decade. Also children learn formal prayers like the Hail Mary and the Lord's Prayer. Since wall rosaries are expensive, more than fifty dollars, I decided to design one with recycled t-shirt spaghetti yarn. The rosary is soft and because of its length, everyone can hold onto it and pray.

Size: 71 inches long

Gauge: Cross = 5 inches The yarn gives a variable in gauge. Just work smoothly and evenly.

Materials:

Crochet hook Size P-16/11.5 I used Red Heart Crystalites

2 x-large t-shirts cut into spaghetti yarn Each x-large t-shirt will yield 34 yards of yarn

To make recycled t-shirt spaghetti yarn, I have photo tutorial that gives you the step-by-step on how to do it. Click here for photo step-by-step: http://crochetliving.blogspot.com/2014/07/how-to-cut-up-t-shirt-into-tarn-yarn.html

Special stitches:

Small bead is a puff stitch

Puff Stitch : Insert hook into indicated ch, pull up a loop, yarn over, insert hook into same ch, pull up a loop, you have 4 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops

Large bead is a 3 dc cluster

3 dc cluster ( 3 dc cl): Yarn over hook and insert into indicated ch, pull up a loop, 3 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, (yarn over and insert into same ch, pull up a loop, pull through 2 loops ) 2 times, 4 loops on hook, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.

Instructions:

Rosary is worked in a continuous row, starting with the cross.

Cross: First arm---ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from the hook, ch 1, sl st in first ch of beg ch-4,bottom post---ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, ch 3, sl st in the original ch-1 of beg ch-4, 2nd arm---ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from the hook, ch 1, sl st in original ch-1 of beg ch-4,top post---c h 4, dc in in original first ch of beg ch-4, turn, sl st in sp between the dc and the ch-4, cross completed. Continue with the beads of the first section dangle.

Ch 4, 3 dc cl in 2nd ch from hook, ch 4, puff in 2nd ch from hook, (ch 3, puff in 2nd ch from hook) 2 times, ch 4, 3 dc cl in 2nd ch from hook, ch 4, for the center medallion, in the 2nd ch from the hook work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) What you will have now is a large bead, 3 small beads, a large bead and a medallion. This completes the dangle of the rosary. Continue with the decades.

First decade--- (ch 3, puff st in 2nd ch from the hook)10 times, ch 4, 3 dc cl in 2nd ch from the hook. 10 small beads and a large bead. Count each decade as you go to avoid errors.

Second to Fourth decade--- ch 4, puff st in 2nd ch from the hook, (ch 3, puff st in 2nd ch from the hook) 9 times, ch 4, 3 dc cl in 2nd ch from the hook. You will have 10 small beads and a large bead

Fifth decade---- ch 4, puff st in 2nd ch from the hook, (ch 3, puff st in 2nd ch from the hook) 9 times, ch 1, sl st to top of beginning ch 3 of medallion. Fasten off. Weave in all ends. Manipulate each bead so that the dimension faces outward.
