Critic's Notebook: Real Nice Clambake; food cart tour; all-you-can-eat AsiaDogs; WBCC

Any sign that the economy is recovering is welcome, though a recent report in the Wall Street Journal that New York's restaurant industry is registering a stronger pulse may—if the truth be told—feel like a mixed blessing. Good news for the industry, bad news for your pocketbook, since it likely heralds an end to all those great bargains.

Luckily a few remain. Starting July 4th and running throughout the summer, the TriBeCa steakhouse Dylan Prime will be offering a clambake on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for $39.95. In keeping with strict Down East tradition, the meal will center on lobster (two 1¼-pound specimens), and will include mussels, corn

on the cob, and potatoes, as well as, of course, clams.

As an added incentive to visit, the restaurant will reduce its corkage fee to a penny per bottle, effective as of last Sunday. Dylan Prime is located 62 Laight Street, at Greenwich St, 212-334-4783.

À la Cart

If you think you already know which of the dozens of food trucks and carts that fairly line the city's curbs and sidewalks are the best, then skip ahead to the next section. If, on the other hand, you'd like to know what the tour guides at Urban Oyster think, then don't touch that dial.

Urban Oyster is a Brooklyn-based company that provides walking tours of, among other things, the food carts of Midtown Manhattan. Through an arrangement with The Dealist, you can get in on one of their tours for $20, a 56-percent savings off the normal price of $45. The tours are conducted every Friday, beginning at 2 p.m., and last two hours. The starting point is 46th Street and Sixth Avenue. The fee includes food tastings, a bottle of water, and a tour map of the neighborhood. The offer at the Dealist is valid through midnight on Monday, June 21.

All-You-Can-Eat AsiaDogs

As previously reported in this space, the city has no shortage of all-you-can-eat restaurant deals. Many of these are regular fixtures, others ephemeral. A deal this coming Tuesday, June 22, at Trophy Bar, in Williamsburg, falls into the second category. For one night only, the Brooklyn watering hole is offering unlimited AsiaDogs and beer for $25. AsiaDogs, should the name fail to ring a gong, are the brainchild of Melanie Campbell and Stephen Porto, whose gustatory passions run to wieners and Asian food—hence this curious hybrid. Among the more unusual toppings are a combination of aïoli, pâté, cucumbers, pickled carrot and daikon, cilantro, and jalapeños, which sounds (there is no other word for it) ongepotchket.

The event at Trophy Bar, which is scheduled to run from 7 to 9 p.m., is open exclusively to members of TastingTable NYC. Registration at the organization's website is free. Trophy Bar is located at 351 Broadway, nr Keap St, Brooklyn, 347-227-8515.

WBCC

Regular readers of this column know that I have been tracking the evolution of a new species of New York restaurant—viz., Victus Specialis, or places that offers one and only one dish. A new sighting has been reported by Grub Street New York, which notes the recent opening of the modestly named The Best Chocolate Cake in the World, which has claimed the lease on a sliver of a storefront in SoHo.

A spin-off of a mini-chain in São Paolo, Brazil, with the equally humble name O Melhor Bolo de Chocolate de Mundo, the store actually serves up three different cakes, one made with chocolate that is 53 percent cocoa butter, another with chocolate that is that is 70 percent cocoa butter, and a bitter, sugarless version, which frankly sounds punishing. All cakes are flourless. But do they live up to their inflated billing? Expect an answer in this column presently.
