Marie Antoinette: “My blood alone remains. Take it but do not make me suffer long.”

This episode starts off brilliantly with a double fake out. Sometimes in procedurals, it is easy to call what happens in the opening sequence. The writers play a little game with the viewers by having the identity of the unsub and the victim be a fake out, if that makes sense. It’s hard to describe. Yes, this is a small thing that only encompasses the first two minutes of the show, but still it is nice to see the writers mix things up ever so slightly. Did anyone else really love the opening?
The real unsub is Bryan Hughes, and he is an artist who likes to use the blood from his victims as paint. He needs to find his edge as a painter somehow. The writers don’t get into the mindset of Bryan all that much. It seems like they were trying to keep the mystery of why he does what he does since his identity isn’t a mystery. This is one of those instances where it would be nice to get inside his head. His interactions with the gallery owner are telling, but there could have been more. After the episode wrapped, there isn’t a clear sense of why Bryan does what he does and who he is, unlike there is in the last episode with Maeve’s killer. What do you think? Did you like the way the writers handled the case or are you not completely blown away by it?
Reid is still trying to recover from Maeve’s death. A lot of time isn’t spent on how he is feeling, well other than he isn’t doing all that great. It would have been weird if the writers had Reid really open up about how he is feeling because it would be a little out of character for him, at least by having him do so this early on in the healing process. Hopefully he will share more about how he is doing, but right now, it is okay for the writers to take it slow with showing Reid’s recovery. It’s great to see everyone reacting to Reid’s loss and seeing their concern for him. These are small moments, but they are great. Did anyone else love that Garcia went all Reid-like and researched the best things to get him?
