James Burke: “Why should we look to the past in order to prepare for the future? Because there is nowhere else to look.”
The Cruz and JJ secret is finally revealed. This mystery has been hinted at since the premiere, but honestly the writers didn’t need to have so many scenes with Cruz and JJ at the beginning. They could have seriously cut back on those moments, especially in the early episodes. About halfway through the episode, the writers try to get viewers to think Cruz is the double agent. It sort of works, but because of the writers trying to attempt this, the torture scenes become hard to follow in regards to Cruz. I had to sit there a minute and try to figure out what exactly is happening because first the writers want people to believe Cruz has been shot, then he goes to JJ, and then he strung up and being tortured again. What did you think of JJ and Cruz during this episode?
A big part of the episode happens in the past. The writers do a good job providing just enough detail in the flashbacks. They aren’t extraneous scenes, and it isn’t difficult to follow along with what is happening. The one really surprising thing in the flashback is when JJ tells three people that she doesn’t know that she suspects an inside man. It could have been part of her theory to get one of them to mess up, but it does not come out that way. JJ comes off has too trusting and naive by sharing her suspicions. She doesn’t realize Hastings is the double agent until she is taken. What did you think of JJ’s decision to share her inside man theory?
Here are quick thoughts on elsewhere in the episode. Essentially the BAU is playing catch up. They are dividing and conquering as they try to figure out the identity of JJ’s assignment. The BAU storyline plays second fiddle to the JJ storyline, and that is how it should be. What is really great about this episode is that the writers showcase JJ and Emily’s friendship. While it is hard to place some of the flashbacks in context with what we know has happened previously on the show, it is great to have those flashbacks of JJ and Emily. What did you think of the 200th episode?
