Patrick Rothfuss: “There are times when the mind is dealt such a blow it hides itself in insanity. While this may not seem beneficial, it is. There are times when reality is nothing but pain, and to escape that pain, the mind must leave reality behind.”

“The Edge of Winter” is tonight’s episode of “Criminal Minds.” This article contains spoilers, so beware! To review the last case file, click here. “Criminal Minds” airs Wednesday nights at 8 on CBS (KHOU).

This is an unusual set up for an episode. The present day is a year after the investigation occurs. Morgan goes to interview Daria, a surviving victim, in order to prepare her for her testimony at trial that is coming up. First off, it is great to see more of what the BAU does. There entire job is not simply tracking down serial killers. They also aid in witness prep. This is how viewers are introduced to the case, through Morgan trying to get Daria to recall what happened to her. Did you enjoy the episode set up?

Most of the unsub scenes come from recalling what happened to her. This is a nice twist on seeing the unsub because the focus is on the victim. Sadly, there is at least one scene involving the unsub that is not from Daria’s memory, and it really has no place in the episode. It is Joe (the unsub) shoving Carrie into a trunk and saying that they are going on a trip. The writers should have just cut that out, and only had unsub scenes that Daria recalled or that were from other people like Daria’s sister and Kobe’s memory. This is a small thing, and other than that, the way the unsub scenes happened were great. Did you enjoy how the unsub scenes were handled?

In the end, it is revealed that Daria was Joe’s partner. A year ago, the theory was that she was forced to do this, and so that is why she has been in a mental institution. There are a couple flashbacks that are altered to the truth, and this is great to see. There is a shift in Daria in the present, and it would have been fantastic to explore that a little more. She starts treating the cards differently, and even the way she speaks and acts is different. This type of thing almost requires Reid to be there or at least to be watching, in order to comment on this. What did you think of the Daria twist?
