September 26th 2013; Crime Stoppers Houston, kicked off their newest society for prevention of crime: (M.A.C.) Mothers against Crime. Their Inaugural lunch took place at 3001 Main Street, Houston; home of the Crime Stoppers headquarters. Mothers against Crime is a society of citizens concerned with the safety of our community’s' children, families and neighborhoods. Mothers against Crime was born out of the need for citizens to become more active participants in the war on crime in Houston.
“Crime Stoppers of Houston is the most successful organization of its kind”, says Executive Director Rania Mankarious. The fact is, that leveraging anonymous tips from the community works, in part by removing barriers of fear that have long hindered law enforcement.
FBI Special Agent, Amanda Hinton gave an impactful presentation seminar on child safety. During this free to the press and public brown bag luncheon, Special agent Hinton delivered statistical data, via a safe smart slide show; that would make you think twice about the way you handle preventative measures in your home and community toward being proactive about stopping crimes. She delivered key information of how crimes evolve from places such as, cyberbullying, bullying, sexting, child pornography and so forth.
As you send your children back to school, you must not become relaxed in standards and rules. When you have children who are accessing the internet, have cell phones and other electronic devices that put social media and other online resources at their fingertips, you have to still consider the dangers that can come from those avenues to the world. Children are susceptible to many forms of crime and dangers where they can become a victim or even participant of illegal online activity. Going forward, paying close attention to the internet safety risk it’s imperative to set consequences for online choices. Hinton expressed her involvement with the F.B.I over the years and her personal account of what she has seen children do, and it’s quite disturbing.
When parents are aware of the process by which their children may become exposed to predators or criminal activity, they can address accordingly. When parents and community leaders as well as activist hold hands in a collaborative effort to prevent crimes in our community as well as against our children; they create barrier to keep it out, which will then give them a platform to work outside the barrier. Cutting out the core and then working on the surrounding can potentially eliminate the future of rising numbers in crime. While parents, teachers and school administrators all have to play a role in keeping schools safe, students themselves are the best weapon to fight crime.
The point was driven home by data that would also show that your child may be contributing to a potentially harmful situation, which could escalate into something out of control; by what they say and post online about themselves. Teach and enforce social responsibility by rewards, so that your children know the importance of reporting criminal activity that may infect our society and community.
