Creme of Nature Dermatologist Dr. Fran Shares the Ins & Outs of Hair Loss

Newly appointed Creme of Nature spokesperson Dr. Fran, a "renowned dermatologist & author known for her work with and research on skin of color," shares gave her expert opinion on hair & scalp issues.

Q: How can hair loss be identified?

Dr. Fran: [By] observing more hair than normal in your surroundings. Count your strands of hair. [If you have shed more then 100-200 strands of hair in a day this may be a sign of hair loss.] Noticing breakage in your hair & no longer being able to style your hair as you did in the past is also a sign. Obvious signs include small section of hair loss, such as parts widening, and bald spots.

Q: What are common causes of hair loss?

Dr. Fran: There is hormonal hair loss and traumatic hair loss or Alopecia. Traumatic hair loss is the most common type of hair loss. It can be caused by pulling the hair tightly, over processing the hair, and intense heat from styling appliances.

Q: What are some ways to combat hair loss?

Dr. Fran: Avoiding the extreme. Don’t pull the hair, for long periods of time, in the same direction; alter the hairstyle to vary the pull. Try to identify the correct products for your hair [focus on] those that will provide nutrients and hydration.

Q: What would be your overall tip for healthy hair?

Dr. Fran: There is no one thing that is right for everyone. [I suggest that my patients] minimize the heat, traction, or pull on the roots, alternate their hairstyles and develop a hair care regimen based on their [hair] texture and hair care needs.
