As the kids go back to school, creating connections between all children is a way to combat bullying and to develop respect and understanding. Friendly's Restaurants and Easter Seals have created a program Friends Who Care for elementary students to understand each other, both kids with disabilities and without disabilities.
The goals of the program are two-fold:
- All children those with and without disabilities are accepted and respected.
- All children are included in school and after-school activities.
To reach the goals, a fun curriculum educates children on a range of disabilities with activities, exercises and discussions. The program discusses and explains disabilities ranging from sensory disabilities such as hearing and seeing to autism and intellectual disabilities. The Friends Who Care program provides teaching opportunities for classrooms, schools and community groups.
Getting to know each other is the way to create connections between kids and this program is a way to do that. It can create understanding and respect among all children and that is the way to combat alienation and bullying.
