There are a lot of great tips and tricks available on the internet that will help you use your balls of yarn with less hassle. People use everything from cardboard boxes to kitchen bowls as yarn holders, and that list seems to grow every day.
This creative soda bottle yarn holder is a great way to recycle old soda bottles, and is simple to make to boot.
This is how you make a recycled soda bottle yarn holder.
Gather your materials
For this yarn holder you will need, a large soda bottle, some paper towels, and a pair of sharp scissors.
Preparing the bottle
To start, you will need to wash the bottle out with hot soapy water. The best way to do that is to fill it half way with water, put a little dish soap in the water, replace the cap, and give it a shake. Once you feel the bottle is clean, empty the soapy water out and rinse the bottle clean. Then you are ready to make your yarn opening.
Making the yarn opening
There are a number of ways you can do this, but I find the best way is to cut the hole in the center of the bottle. This way the top and bottom of the bottle stays intact, and the sides of the bottle will keep the yarn inside.
You can either freehand the circle opening or you can trace around something with a marker on the bottle before cutting. Either way it's important to make sure the yarn opening is big enough to let the yarn in, but not so big the yarn comes out while you are using it.
Time to dry
After your yarn opening has been cut out, you can then take a paper towel or two and dry the inside of the bottle. Then, once your bottle is completely dry, you are ready to add your yarn.
Using the yarn holder
Using the bottle yarn holder is simple. Once you put the yarn inside the bottle, you need to thread the yarn tail through the mouth piece of the bottle, and you're ready to work.
