You have a bunch of photos that you want to share with family and friends, but you don't want to put them on Facebook or any image-sharing sites like Flickr and Picasa.
What do you do?
If you have Dreamweaver and Fireworks, then your problem is solved. You don't even need to know how to use Fireworks for this to work. Dreamweaver engages Fireworks on your behalf. All you need to do is make sure all your images are in one folder.
In the Main Menu, click on Command and scroll down to Create Web Photo Album.
In the pop-up window, you'll name your photo album and give it a subheading, if you like.
Your source folder will be the folder where your images are, and your destination folder is where you want Dreamweaver to put the files it creates. The source folder and destination folder can be the same, but it would probably be better to have them be different folders.
For each photo, Dreamweaver and Fireworks will make a thumbnail of each image, and they will create a page for each image. The navigation will be created also. The nagivation will allow you to go from page-to-page to see each full image, with next and previous links.
Once your web photo album is created, you can then style it with CSS.
If you'd like a step-by-step demonstration of creating the album, watch the video, How to Create a Web Photo Album with Dreamweaver and Fireworks. The YouTube version is available here.
Please note: Unfortunately, the Create Web Photo Album capability was removed from Dreamweaver CS5, so you may want to think about hanging on to your copy of CS4, CS3 or Dreamweaver 8, if you think this is a feature that will benefit you. It is possible to run more than one version of Dreamweaver at a time on your computer. You just need to make sure you have enough RAM and processing speed. See my article, Why it's wise to keep older versions of Dreamweaver, for more information.
Do you have Dreamweaver but not Fireworks, and you'd like to use the Create Web Photo Album feature? If your budget is a little tight, don't worry about it. Adobe has started subscription programs for their applications. For a monthly fee you can have access to some or all of Adobe's applications. See my article, Dreamweaver CS5 for $19! No way! Way!, for more information.
